ABOUT MY ART
I have work in many mediums and styles of painting, each feeding my creative being and soul.
In my latest series of paintings 2018- 19 it was important for me to feel the speed of time captured on the canvases. They are inspired by both the environment in which I'm surrounded and the fact that time seems to be moving faster than ever before. The colors are more intense and the strokes harder and continuous. I took away anything that resembles a familiar shape and left just the essences of landscapes so that they became the most important elements.
Many of my past landscapes were about driving and inspired by the countryside I saw while touring around upstate NY and VT. Pushing and pulling the paint, colors, structure, line, movement, speed and light are very important components. These pieces are a direct result of my connection with living in the country and my fondness for driving adventures down unknown roads.
I also love to paint animals. Painting a subject like a pet from a photo keeps me tuned into the fundamentals of painting that I learned 3 decades ago. It takes time, layers of paint, and patience to get the spirit of the subject. My more “expressive” animal paintings appear to be very light-hearted and sometimes fantastical; they push the boundaries between real and unreal. These iconic forms of chickens, rabbits, ducks and owls are loose translations of reality. They have all lead me to creating the pure abstractions that I am doing now.
About Me
Life in rural SE Pennsylvania in the 60's and 70's with 7 siblings, 12 dogs, 4 cats, 5 horses, and some chickens and goats in the mix was a good foundation for an artistic life. I am a graduate of Syracuse University with a BFA, where I learned the basic skills of painting and drawing along with a solid foundation in photography. I later attended The Art Students League of New York to further my understanding of process and of painting.
I spent the 13 years as the founder and director of Exhibition Outreach Program of Art Students League of NY where I helped hundreds of artists find their way through the sometimes difficult maze of marketing and exhibiting their art. In July 2018, I accepted a position to work as the Administrative Coordinator for the Artists Fellowship, Inc. a non-profit that provides emergency funding to professional visual artists in need.
I have exhibited in numerous places including the Good Gallery Kent, CT, 3 Pears Gallery Dorset, VT, Heather Blue Home Reading, PA, Flores Fine Art and Gallery 100 Saratoga Springs, NY. I have had solo- exhibitions at the Grace Gallery, NYC, Mimosa Gallery Saratoga Springs, NY, and Valley Artisans in Cambridge NY. And in 2010 and 2011 was featured in two 2-person shows at the Riverfront Studios in Schuylerville, NY. . I have participated in group shows with many local venues and my work is in numerous private collections and public venues including Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs.
